CHOOSING YOUR SIZE
MEASURING YOUR SCISSORS
Your scissors are measured in inches 1 inch = 2.54cm
The scissor is measured from the end of the lowest finger ring (not the finger rest) to the tip of the scissors.
The blade length will vary depending on different models, some have shorter blades and longer handles, and some have shorter handles and longer blades
PRECISION SIZES
For precision work, a shorter scissor of around 4.5-5.5" will be best.
SCISSOR OVER COMB SIZES
For barbers, scissors that are 6.5" or above will be necessary when creating fades. This will give you the best scissor over comb result to ensure even cutting along the scalp
THE CORRECT SIZE FOR YOUR HANDS
Not sure which size to get?
We recommend measuring from the bottom of the palm of your hand, to the tip of the middle finger, and choosing a scissor that is the same size or little smaller or a little longer, depending on what you are comfortable with.
Using a scissor that is the same length as your hand will be comfortable and in proportion to you and won't feel too big or too small.
Please ensure to convert your measurement to inches to mathc your scissors measurements:
e.g. 16cm hand measurement will be 6.2".
As a general rule, we recommend 5.5" or 6" scissors for haridressers. larger scissors will be suitable for bigger hands as the fingers tend to be longer meaning you are at a lesser risk of injuring yourself while cutting.
CHOOSING THE BLADE SHAPE
STRAIGHT BLADE
All Rounder - Point & Blunt
This design can do everything but excels at blunt and point cutting. Generally the straighter the blade, the easier it will be to hold the hair without the hair sliding. With a straight blade scissor you can expect exactly what you see, clean straight, blunt lines.
CAT EYE BLADE
All Rounder - Blunt, Point, Slide
True all-rounder design, scissor that can do a little bit of everything from blunt and point cutting to feathering & sliding. This blade can do some light dry cutting. Slight cat eye shaped blades can encourage sliding if cutting large sections of hair
CURVED THICK BLADE
All Rounder - Blunt & Slide
This shape creates even weight distribution along the blades resulting in a powerful blunt cut. The curved lines in this design will follow the contour of the head and natural motion of feathering. Recommended for experience cutters
SWORD BLADES
All Rounder - Heavy Point & Blunt
The sword shape is designed to deliver a heavy cut all the way from the end to the point of the blade. Blades with a ridge in the blade will result in powerful cuts regardless of the length of the blade. Expect powerful blunt and precision cuts
LEAFED BLADES
Slide Cutting
Leafed blades will not cut a straight line, they will push the hair out of the blades while cutting, sliding through the hair and creating graduation style layers and effortless feathering, and texture. Add some dimension to your cutting.
CHOOSING THE HANDLE
1. Choosing the alignment
LEVEL SET HANDLES
Tradtional Cutters
This is a traditional handle design and replicates how hairdressing scissors were initially designed. This handle type is recommended for experienced cutters trained classically
OFFSET HANDLES
Natural Hand Position
The offset handle is a new design that was made with ergonomics considered. The result of this design allows your hand to sit in a more natural grip around the handles. with your thumb in a relaxed position
Handles choice will be based on your training and what you are comfortable with based on your own personal experience.
2. Choosing the fit
FREEMOVING HANDLES
Hairdressing and Freehand
Loose fit handles will allow you to move your hand more freely around the handle. If you like to hold your scissors in different positions a looser fit handle may be more suitable. This tends to be more favourable for hairdressing
TIGHT FITTING HANDLES
Control & Precision
Tighter fit handles will give you more control and precision. You will also require less grip to hold your scissors in position and the scissor will sit effortlessly in your hand. This tends to be more favourable for barbers who require precision while cutting and tend to move their hands less around the handles.
